10kgs of Apricots!

Scarecrow's Garden Log: 10:01:2010:

We have finally found a use for those noisy Galahs
that wake us up at 5am!
This is one of many
who are weeding the Community Garden block,
they dig up the bulbs and eat them!

Temperatures this week:
Lowest Min 6.5C
Lowest Max 31.7C
Highest Max 40.2C
No Recorded Rainfall

What's the weather been like in the garden?
Temps have been up around 35C and above most of the week. That makes very early morning starts a necessity if you want to get anything done outside!

Propagation:
Potting up/on:
  • Amaranth - Leaf
  • Lettuce Gold Rush
  • Basil sweet Genovese
  • Parcel
  • Into punnets as they germinated so they didn't get too crowded and dry out in the heat.
Cuttings/Division:
Lamb's Ears were divided and potted up coz they were growing over the pathway and getting in Doc's way.

What's around the Garden This week:
Lot's of extra shade during the 40C (104F) heat see this post

The new chookies have made their way through
one bale of straw, so this has been raked up
and spread around the Dog Pen Garden beds
and in the Almond area!

The chicks are growing up fast and have stopped chirping and now make 'real chook' noises! We have started to let them out into the orchard when it's in shade and they busily dig and scratch around and pick up any fallen fruit. biggrin

Sunflowers are, as always, a welcome sight in the garden.
I didn't plant any this year
so I'm just enjoying the volunteers, as are the bees!

Just on 10kgs of Apricots have all been picked and dried,
so we took the net off and left the rest to the Wattlebirds.
They cleared them up in a couple of days!

We re-used the netting over the Plum tree
next to the Apricot!

The New Year Begins

Scarecrow's Garden Log: 2:01:2010:

The Greens in the Wicking Boxes grew well in the heat
so hopefully we will have some fresh greens soon!


Temperatures this week:
Lowest Min 11.3C
Lowest Max 24C
Highest Max 38C
No Recorded Rainfall

What's the weather been like in the garden?
As it warmed up this week we had 3 days of over 36 degrees but the cool change on Friday night brought relief but no rain.
Extra shade was attached to the western sides of growing beds as well as over any newly planted or emerging seedlings.

The heat sparked a growth spurt in the Comfrey
which seems to enjoy life under the 75% shadecloth cover.
You can see the sun scorch on the older leaves.

Rockmelons also put on growth
and the Gourd seedlings took off,
safe with their little protectors in place.

Propagation:
Seeds:
  • Cosmos 'Seashell Mix' Cosmos bipinnatus
  • Beetroot Golden Detroit Beta vulgaris
  • Mangelwurzel Beta vulgaris
  • These went into punnets and pots in the propagation area under shadecloth.
Potting up:
Into punnets:
  • Lettuce Gold Rush
  • Celtuce
  • Basil Lettuce Leaf
  • Basil sweet Genovese
  • Kale Morton's Mix
  • Kale Squire
Put under 75% shadecloth until settled,
then moved to 50% shade.

Potted on:

Strawberry Guava
(seedlings from the home saved seed!)

Basil Lettuce Leaf
Malabar Spinach -
green and red stemmed

Free from the Garden:
  • Dug up seedling Catmint Nepeta mussinii plants that were popping up in the Strawberry tank bed.
  • Collected Tagasaste seeds from the popping pods!
  • Borage is sprouting in the Dog Pen Beds, I use these seedlings as mulch around the tomato plants there.
  • Borage was listed on Food'n'Stuff's Dynamic Accumulators post recently!
  • The list suggests it is an accumulator of Sulphur and Potassium.
New in the Garden This week:

This years Trees For Life plantings
sprout new seedlings with each cool change!

The Old Man Saltbush
I'm growing on for the Community Garden
has taken off after the addition
of some slow release native plant food!

Rockmelons are volunteering in Bed 1
in the Main Vegetable Garden.

Cucumbers (Marketmore) nearly ready!

The Cherries have been eaten, dried
and frozen for future use!

What's happening in the garden?

Feverfew Tanacetum parthenium is flowering. It's sad that it apparently repels bees. So I don't plant it where I want the bees to help with pollination!

Some of Doc's Gourds have been attacked by slaters! On a recent Gardening Australia Josh Byrne said to try putting pots (with the bottoms cut out) over the seedlings to protect them. So I did! mrgreen It's working so far.

A few of the Blue Lake Beans
are climbing up the mesh cover on Bed 3
and are starting to flower!

Propagation:
Seeds:
  • Cucumber Green Gem
  • Tomato Burnley Bounty
  • These went into small pots
  • Gourds Dancing/Spinning (to replace the ones the slaters ate)
  • Beans Purple King top up planting in Bed 1
  • Zucchini Black (replacements for seedlings the grasshoppers ate!)
  • Beans Soy Centaur
  • Sweetcorn Anasazi
  • These went into the Wicking beds in the Dog Pen Garden
Planting out:
  • Alpine Strawberries Fragaria vesca
  • Warrigal Greens Tetragonia tetragonoides
  • Jerusalem Artichokes Helianthus tuberosus
  • Nectarine tree (seedling)
  • These went into the Almond area which has been tidied and mulched.
  • Spinach - Ceylon/Malabar Basella rubra on the sides of the beds in the Main Veg Garden to allow it to climb up the arches
  • Yacon Polymnia sonchifolia planted in the Kitchen Garden
  • Silverbeet 'Rainbow Chard' and Lettuce 'Freckles' seedlings into topped up Wicking boxes on one of the propagation benches.
Cuttings:
Dusty Miller while I was hacking (ooops I mean pruning) it back! wink

New in the Garden This week:

Not in my garden but we had a surprise in the morning of Christmas Eve with a phone call to say the council would meet us at the Community Garden site to start the Earthworks! When Doc and I arrived we found a couple of visitors already there. Two ponies had escaped from the next paddock...just as well we haven't planted anything yet! eek

Mr Council Worker made a great start on levelling out and shaping the block!

While there we found a few critters in/on the soil nearby!
