Interior Design Programs

Interior Design ProgramsInterior design programs prepare the design student for the exciting and challenging world of interior design. A designer will run into during their career many different design situations. On occasion, as a designer you may run into the ideal client. A client that says to spare no expense on the decorating would be an ideal client. They just want you to make it fantastic!

Other clients are much less accommodating. Interior design programs will prepare the student for these types of clients as well. A less accommodating client will set a low budget and ask many questions. The knowledgeable designer will have the answers though.

The interior design student will learn how to get the client a good return on their decorating investment. The interior design programs offered by many colleges and universities teach the student how to turn a small investment in decorating into a good return on investment. For example, a minor bathroom remodeling can be one of the best ways to recoup an investment. In the bathroom, change the light fixtures, sinks, tile, counter tops, shower, and bathtub area.

Another area of the home that garners a good return on investment is the kitchen area. Changes made in the kitchen include a new stove, new kitchen cabinets, a new counter top and some new flooring. Students can expect to learn this type of interior design in interior design programs.

Students will learn to work with a budget as well. Most clients will not have an unlimited budget to work with. Learning to work on a budget is a valuable skill and the interior designer must be good at it. Working on a budget does not mean the design changes will reflect the amount of money spent. Painting interior walls in neutral colors is a well-known budget conscious design tool. Changing light fixtures is another budget conscious decorating idea. You will be surprised how much these minor changes affect a room.

Home Interior Decorating

As with anything the process of decorating your home in order to make it look nice becomes much easier especially when it complements the fabric and architecture of the house. In relation to home interior decorating by applying certain wallpapers, or painting the walls, or selecting furnishings and fittings (lights etc) and by including small accent decorations to the rooms (paintings or prints) it will provide the house with a certain feel.

There are many interior designers/decorators as well as some architects around who can provide a professional interior decoration service and you will soon see the difference between a home interior decoration and interior design.

With respect to home interior decoration this specifically focuses on the finishing touches such as wall paper, window coverings (curtains, blinds etc.,), furnishings and paint, whilst interior design is more involved with the architecture as well as room layout and other design parameters (cabinet making) that go into making a house a home.

The idea of home interior decoration first found its place in late 18th Century Paris and London and the more modern home interior decoration was began by Jeanselme from Paris, Lenygon and Morant from London and Ogden Codman who was based in New York. Over the last few years the idea of home interior decoration has gone through many phases and trends and certainly the most current trend is for trying to find ways to decorate a home on a budget.

With any home interior decoration scheme the whole idea is to improve the functionality of the home as well as reflect the owners taste and personality.

In 2003 homeowners had spent about $175 billion to improve their homes and about 65% of this was actually spent on the interior decoration of the home. Certainly the latest trend when carrying out any home interior decoration is for people to spend money on expanding their kitchens and livening up their outdated bathrooms. Also more emphasis is being placed on people creating a room for a specific purpose (family room, child's play room) as well as on areas for individual members of a family (child's bedroom, master bedroom).

As with respect to colour schemes these seem to be undergoing a change also with more and more people looking towards more earthy tones and turning away from the vibrant colours of the past. More and more people seem to prefer blue and grey colours in all different shades against the dull reds and dark blues of previous years.

Certainly the more innovative home interior decorating ideas around that do not cost much but give the same impression as a more expensive and ornate scheme are the latest trend for new career professionals and young married couples.

Often you will find that the focus relating to home interior decorating has changed from the more unique look of the 1980's to a much more functional and harmonized look.

Over the last 15 years there have been some dramatic changes where home interior decoration is concerned and therefore for any good interior decorator keeping track of the latest trends is essential in much the same way that a computer geek will keep track of the latest hardware and software that has hit the market.

Interior Decorating Project

All of us love to surround our world with things, which are both beautiful as well as exotic. Our homes are one of the most intrinsic parts of the world around us. Therefore, most of us enjoy making our homes more than a mere structure made up of four walls and a roof.

Home decor styles range from a number of themes, designs, and materials. While planning your home decor project, you can either opt for the theme being implemented throughout the house or use one specific theme for a specific room. For example, a house was once designed in such a way that each room was decorated with the styles of the different countries the home owner had visited. All rooms included authentic art and furniture from each visited country.

An assessment of your needs is preferrable before embarking on the process of a new home interior decorating project. The next point to keep in mind would obviously be taste such as personal likings and dislikings. You can then choose from several themes that can stretch from Victorian to more contemporary themes, which are more suited to the modern and urban lifestyle. One of the modern themes including home decor ideas that are really catching up is the use of bamboo. Eco-friendly and beautiful, bamboo has a number of advantages that account for its popularity as a first choice for home interior decoration. Transform your home to a tropical paradise of peace and harmony with the use of bamboo. Another benefit of using bamboo is the fact that the material is famous for its sheer versatility. You can incorporate it into almost anything beginning with floorings to even towels! The main point to remember when using bamboo for decorating your home interior is the fact that the glue that is used for sealing the sheets into a pattern should be non-toxic glue. This is especially important when bamboo flooring is glued with inexpensive or low quality glue. The flooring can cause the floors to dent and also cause them to give out a harmful gas called Formaldehyde.

Curtains can also match with the flooring with convenience as bamboo curtains can be easily purchased all over the world. It is best to keep the interior spaces clutter-free while using bamboo flooring, as this would go a long way in enhancing the ambience. The color that this theme would necessarily involve would be slightly muted. Furthermore, this color is quite fashionable in this decade. In case you want to add color to the space, cushions and rugs make make nice floor decor additions. To add a bit of freshness to the room, accentuate the muted sophistication of the theme with a couple of bright hibiscus flowers and perhaps a well chosen painting with a color selection that matches the home decor accessories.

Types of contemporary lightingContemporary lamps are generally made from various types of materials like chrome-brushed steel or even glass cut in floral patterns or other interesting designs. The glass used is also of various forms such as frosted glass, marbelized glass or gold and silver patterns forged on it. Using Swarovski crystals are also another very popular trend while even others make use of murano glass. The other varieties include recessed lighting near the floor level or pendant lighting, track lighting, wall sconces, portable lighting and accent lighting. This variety of lights is utilized to accentuate or highlight a certain portion of the room or hanging artworks. Sometimes subtle or dim lights are also used to move the focus away from something that need not be highlighted.Contemporary lighting is also highly functional and is available in various forms which enable installation of a particular type of light for a specific use. Earlier a single light in the ceiling illuminated the entire room, but now there might be as many as 7 different lights strategically placed in a single room!
