Philip Johnson
Johnson could certainly be called the dean of American architecture. During the last seventy years, Johnson has defined the modern house. In 1932, Johnson, along withAlfred Barr and Henry-Russell Hitchcock, organized a show at the Museum of Modern Art in New York of modern houses that presentedarchitecture as art. This is where the term International Style was born. In the International Style, glass and steel dominate while features include expansive interior space and an emphasis on symmetry and elegance. One signature example of the style is Johnson's own New Canaan, Conn., residence known as The Glass House, built in 1949. The other is New York's Seagram Building that Johnson designed in 1958 in association with Mies van der Rohe.
Over the years, Johnson has completed 30 residential projects and his noteworthy clients have included philanthropists John andDominque de Menil, art collector and entrepreneurJoseph Hirshhorn and automobile dynasty scion Henry Ford II.
